In the 1850′s, the Federal Fugitive Slave Act was passed and required northern States to send alleged runaway slaves back to the south – no questions asked. No trial, no witnesses. Nothing. Many heroic northern states resisted – so much so that when South Carolina gave its official reason for secession, the first issue named was the fact that Northern states were nullifying federal slave laws.
On March 5, 2011, Nullify Now! celebrates this brave resistance to slavery by states and individuals on the Underground Railroad through the story of Joshua Glover – one of the best stories most Americans have never heard.
Glover was a slave in Missouri who managed to escape from his master. In 1854, with the help of the Underground Railroad, he made his way north, all the way to Wisconsin. Unfortunately for Glover, his former master eventually managed to find out where he was.
Because of the Federal Fugitive Slave Act, he was thrown in jail and was to be sent back to his so-called “owner.” But things didn’t happen that way, and the people of Wisconsin rallied to his support in one of history’s greatest examples of nullification – on March 11, 1854 – Glover was a free man!

Parking:
Freedom Center parking is available in the Central Riverfront Parking Garage. The garage can be accessed off Main Street (the entrance is directly across the street from the Reds Hall of Fame), and also from two locations on Mehring Way, which roughly parallels the Ohio River immediately south of the Freedom Center. There is also a third entrance, on Second Street, underneath Great American Ball Park.
